We were fortunate to hold the Bob Noel Tennis Classic at the brand new tennis facility at Southern Oaks Golf and Tennis Club in Burleson. This was the first adult tournament at the Southern Oaks. Ernie Abraham is the Director of the Southern Oaks Tennis and has been the Bob Noel Tournament Director for more than 20 years. Ernie knew Bob Noel personally when Bob competed at Walnut Creek Country Club. I believe there were 140 players in this year’s tournament and this was
the maximum number of players for a three day event on the 11 courts.
At Friday evening’s registration, one gentleman from the Waco area mentioned that he plays in multiple tournaments throughout the year and we are one of the few that includes a nice shirt with registration. Ernie stated that we had a couple travel from Austin to play in the tournament and they have played numerous times before.
Our Kiwanis Club continued its tradition of preparing hamburgers for the players on Saturday. With the strong wind, this was a challenge this year. We were able to use the Tennis Shop as a wind block and prepared many burgers to the player’s satisfaction. Kiwanis fellowship time around the grill always makes for an enjoyable day. The new tennis facility has both indoor seating area and an outdoor patio for dining that was enjoyed by the players.
Many thanks to Southern Oaks Tennis and Ernie Abraham for hosting and assisting us with a very successful event. The players loved the new facility so I hope we can continue the Bob Noel Tennis tradition at our new site for many more years.
