Many Kiwanians have wondered what they can do to help in the wake of the severe flooding brought on by Hurricane Harvey in the South Texas area. The serious wind damage and current flooding have wrought extreme damage to homes and businesses all along the coastline from Corpus Christi to Louisiana. There will be no such thing as too much help.
The immediate need is supplies for the shelters. Kiwanis International has arranged with partner Dollar Days to ship supplies directly to the shelters. You can go to their website at www.dollardays.com and click the button for Disaster Relief supplies. Or call them at 877/837-9569. Be sure to tell them you are with Kiwanis. We have been told that Dollar Days will put the supplies ordered directly onto a truck heading for South Texas and the shelters. If your club has collected relief packages, contact T-O Disaster Relief Chair Marshall Kregel at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Help will be needed for future weeks and months. There was so much destruction that it will take some time to recover. Much rebuilding will need to take place. That takes money. Look on the T-O website front page at www.txokkiwanis.org. You will see a Paypal “Donate” button which can be used to send cash immediately. Or send a check marked as a donation to the disaster relief fund to Kiwanis T-O District Foundation, 3010 W Park Row Dr #100, Pantego, TX 76013. The foundation is a 501C3 organization and all donations are tax deductible.
We do have some point clubs in the South Texas area which are working directly to get supplies to those who need them most. We could use some more clubs in the area for this purpose. We need locations that can receive the shipments that are fairly close to the shelters and contact info for those locations. If you can accept trucks with supplies and store them temporarily, please contact Marshall.
Prayers are also needed for those whose lives have been so harshly disrupted and for those who are giving their all to help.
Thanks to all who are working so hard to assist!
TX-OK District Secretary
